Harold Ackerley - Private - 291564 Welsh Regiment, 10th Battalion. Died
of Wounds 24/12/1917
age 24. Commemorated at Rue-David Military Cemetery Fleurbaix G.26.
In an article found in the Salford Reporter it is reported that
Harold was accidently shot "in the line" after cleaning his rifle he
was handing the rifle butt end first, that is the muzzle pointing
towards him, having forgotten to apply the safety catch the rifle
discharged shooting Harold in both legs. He was taken to the field
hospital but died shortly after. He was buried at Rue-David Military Cemetery Fleurbaix
where Reverend H Williams presided over his funeral.
Prior to the war he worked at St Bartholomew's and was secretary of
Salford Junior Conservative Association. Son
of Alfred Vernon Ackerley and Clementina
Ackerley, of 17 Regent Square, Salford. Brother of Sydney (see below).
Sydney Ackerley - Lance Corporal -
8046 Manchester Regiment 17th Battalion. Killed in Action 22/03/1918 aged 22.
Commemorated at Pozieres Memorial panel 64 to 67.
Prior to the war he worked at Thomas Collier and Sons, High St,
Manchester. Sydney was awarded the Military Medal for placing a
German machine gun out of action under heavy fire. Son of Alfred Vernon Ackerley and Clementina
Ackerley, of 17 Regent Square, Salford. Brother of Harold (see above).
Thomas Anderson - Private - 1786 Manchester
Regiment, 2nd Battalion. Killed in Action 14/08/1916 aged 24. Commemorated at Cambrin
Churchyard Extension, P56. Husband of Mary Ann Burns (formerly Anderson)
of 8 Cape St, Regent St, Salford.
Joseph H Anlezark - Rifleman - Z/1077
Rifle Brigade. Killed in Action 14/5/1915 aged 20. Commemorated at Ypres (Menin Gate)

information can be found regarding this man. The inscription indicates
his regiment as M.R. Can you help identify him?
Edward Bailey - Private - GS/52935 Royal
Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) 4th Battalion. Killed in Action 13/04/1917.

Archie Bedgood - Private - 20051 The Loyal North Lancashire
Regiment 6th Battalion. Killed in Action 31/01/1917 age unknown. Commemorated
Basra Memorial panel 27.
Prior to the war Archie
had worked at Smith and Coventry Engineers and attended St Clements
Church. Archie fought at Gallipoli where he contracted dysentery and
enteric causing him to be sent to a hospital in Malta then London. In
1916 he was sent to serve in Mesopotamia where he died. He lived at 20
Coronation St, Salford.
George Berry - Lance Corporal - 21443 Kings Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment) 1st
Battalion. Died of Wounds 13/10/1917 aged 25. Commemorated at Dozinghem Military
Cemetery IX. I. 8. Son of George and Sarah Berry, husband of Ellen
(Blair), 107 Sunnyside St, Salford.
George was a velvet dresser before he enlisted in November 1915 and
embarked for France March 1916. Promoted to Lance corporal March 1917.
He was wounded 11/04/1917 (GSW left leg) at the Battle of Arras and was
wounded again at Passendale 13/10/1917 (shrapnel right leg), George died
the same day at Dozinghem casualty clearing station and was buried
there.
Harry Booth - Corporal - 228351 Royal Fusiliers
(London Regiment) 1st Battalion. Killed in Action 20/09/1917 aged 19.
Commemorated at Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, addenda panel.
Harry had
served with the Liverpool Regiment (269415) prior to being transferred
to the Royal Fusiliers. Soldiers Died Great War gives the following
additional information: Formerly 8125, Liverpool Regiment, posted 26th
Royal Fusiliers.
James Bradshaw - Private - 18242 1st Border Regiment.
Killed in Action 1/7/1916 aged 33. Commemorated at Thiepval Memorial pier and face 6A
and 7C.
Son of Alfred and Elizabeth Bradshaw.
James attested 02/12/1914 aged 31 and after training sent to the
Dardanelles and to Egypt, then landed in France 11/03/1916.
James was a moulder before he enlisted in December 1914. He
lived at 14 Rudman St, Salford with his wife Elizabeth (nee Boulderstone), his three sons
Squires, James and Harold and his daughter Elizabeth. Transcript of

James Shaw Brearley - Private - 16579 Border Regiment 1st
Battalion. Died at Sea 13/08/1915 aged 22. Commemorated at Helles memorial Panel
119 to 125 or 222 then 223. Son of James and Nellie Brearley, 41 Regent
Square, Salford; husband of Emma Simpson (formerly Brearley) 4
Hollingwood St, Salford.
James died at sea, along with 59 other
Border Regiment soldiers, when the Royal Edward was sunk after being hit
be a torpedo. See

Walter Burns - Private - 2145 Manchester
Regiment 1st/7th Battalion. Died of Wounds 02/09/1915 aged 20. Commemorated at
Manchester Southern Cemetery. Son of Walter Burns, 47 New Park Road,
Salford.
Robert Cranston - Private - 306735 Lancashire
Fusiliers C Coy 15th Battalion (formally 4493). Killed in Action 25/12/1917 aged 27. Commemorated at Duhallow A.D.S Cemetery.
Robert died at 5.30PM due to a shell explosion.
Prior to the war Robert worked as a clerk at Westinghouse Works,
Trafford Park. Son of Robert and Annie Cranston, 21 Huddart St, Salford.
James Cross - Private - 9731 Royal
Warwickshire Regiment 16th Battalion. Killed in Action 30/08/1916
age unknown. Commemorated Ovillers Military Cemetery, XV. L. 3.
James enlisted in Birmingham and entered France 18/07/1915
Elijah Daniels - Private - 15680 Kings
Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment) 8th Battalion. Killed in Action 02/03/1916 aged 27.
Commemorated at Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial panel 12.
Elijah enlisted 12/10/1914 and went into training at Bournemouth and
Aldershot, embarking for France in September 1915. The last letter
written by him to his wife was dated the same day that he died.
The second-lieutenant of Elijah's Battalion writes to Mrs Daniels:
"After the gallant and dashing charge of the Manchesters
(sic) on March
2, your husband, Private Daniels, failed to answer the roll call and
he was listed as missing, and as he failed day after day to put in
an appearance he has now been reported as killed" "I hope you will
make the best of it, for your husband died doing his duty as a
soldier"
Prior to the war Elijah lived with his wife Ada
(Atkinson) at 41 Oxford St, Salford and had worked at Lloyd's
Packing Warehouse as a case maker.
In the 1901 census Elijah is living with his parents Elijah and Ann Jane
Daniels, he has a brother William and two sisters Annie and Emily.
George Dawson - Private - 16604 Border Regiment
1st Battalion. Killed in Action 01/07/1916 aged 20. Commemorated at Thiepval, pier
and face 6A and 7C. Son of Minnie Dawson, 51 Crowther St, Salford
(formally of 55 Rudman St).
George is also remembered on his families headstone at Weaste
Cemetery (Grave Ref: L-1183).
George enlisted in November 1914 and after training sent to the
Dardanelles and to Egypt after the withdrawal of troops. In February
1916 he was posted to France.
A comrade of George writes in a letter to Mrs Dawson:
"We were always good chums in the Battalion and we promised to
write to each others parents if anything happened to us." "your
beloved son was killed by my side and it was the greatest shock to
me to find that he was dead when I had thought he was asleep." "His
death must have been instantaneous for he never murmured." "it
will be a great relief to you that your son died a hero's death."
Prior to the war George had worked for Gresham and
Craven engineers and attended Christ Church.

George Arthur Dawson - Corporal - 29512 East Yorkshire Regiment
7th Battalion. Killed in Action 07/02/1918 aged 20. Commemorated at Hermies Hill
British Cemetery F. 3. Son of George and Annie Dawson, 206 Chapel St, Salford.
George was a plumber before he attested 19/06/1916 into the Manchester
Regiment as private 51013 aged 18. He had two brothers Ralph and William
and a sister Emily. His I.D. disc and two photographs were the only
personal effects to be returned to his parents.
James Delaney - Sergeant - 7046 Kings
Royal Rifle Corps 4th Battalion. Killed in Action 03/10/1918 aged 31.
Commemorated at Templeux-le-Guerard British Cemetery, I. J. 43. Son of
John and Mary Ann Delaney, of 155, Regent Rd., Salford, Manchester. Born
Bolton. Husband of Mary Lillian Delaney (nee O'Garr) of 50 Silk St,
Salford (married 17/03/1914). James enlisted 18/05/1906 aged 18, prior to enlistment he had worked as
a kitchen porter and his service record records him as "well educated".
James saw service in many countries, his service record shows the
following information:

Regiment Believed to be Robert Doig -
Quartermaster Sergeant - 6211 East Lancashire Regiment 7th
Battalion, B Company. Killed in Action 25/02/1916 aged 36.
Commemorated at St. Vaast Post Military Cemetery, Richebourg-l'Avoue,
II. R. 1.
Robert was killed by a sniper whilst leading a party of the Royal
Scotch Greys to the trenches, and stepping aside on a traverse to
allow them to pass that, he was shot and killed almost instantly.
Robert had gained the rank of Quartermaster Sergeant just two weeks
prior to his death, he was a veteran soldier having served ten years
in India. He was a reservist for six years and was mobilised when
war broke.
Robert had lived with his wife and three children at 27 Oxford St,
Salford and had worked at the Manchester Ship Canal Company as a
foreman loader inspector. He was an ardent Catholic and attended St
Joseph's Church, West Craven St, Salford. Robert's wife received the
news of his death just a month after burying one of their children.
George Done - Private - 205177 Lancashire Fusiliers
2nd/5th Battalion. Killed in Action 20/09/1917 aged 32. Commemorated at Tyne Cot
Memorial.
On December 1st 1918 the Salford Reporter reported that George was
reported missing on the 20/09/1917 and is officially presumed killed
or died of wounds news of this effect having been received by his
wife Sarah Marion (nee Ogden) who lived at 13 Heywood St, Oldfield Rd, Salford.
George married Sarah on the 27th Dec 1915, at this time their
address was given as 25 Duncan St, Salford. Prior to the
war George had worked for Messrs Cookson, pig dealers, of Salford.
James Done - Private - 68947 Royal Welsh Fusiliers
11th Battalion and earlier as Driver 072564 with the Army Service Corps.
Died of Wounds 28/02/1918 age unknown. Commemorated at Sarigol Military Cemetery, Kriston. Son of Mr and Mrs Done, husband of M E Done, 20 Hartington St,
Regent Road, Salford.
John Henry Dorber
- Private - 19507 South Lancashire
Regiment 6th Battalion. Attested 10th June 1915 aged 19 and posted
11/11/1915. Killed in action 19/04/1916 aged 20. Commemorated at
Basra Memorial panel 23.
Prior to the war John had worked as a clerk at Osram Lamp Works and lived at 35 Regent
Square, Salford. Son of Richard and Grace Dorber and brother of
Fred,
Ernest, George, William, Sam and Elsie. John tried to join the army in
Manchester but was rejected due to visual impairment, determined to
do his bit he went to work at Morfa Camp, Conway and was finally
passed as fit for service in June 1915. The only personal effects
returned to his family was John's identity disc, on receipt of this his
mother writes "Very sorry to receive same. Would like his wallet & ring
which was initialled JHD. If it should come in your possession please
forward."
Thomas Dutton -
Corporal - 30465 The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment 1st/4th Battalion,
originally joined the Manchester Regiment as a private, 10633. Killed in
Action 02/06/1918 aged 25. Commemorated at Houchin British Cemetery I. A. 24. Son of Frederick and
Rebecca Dutton, 18 Amy St, Regent Road, Salford.
George Edwards - Private - 28520 Royal
Welsh Fusiliers 16th Battalion. Attested 11/03/1915 aged 29. Killed
in Action 12/04/1918 aged 32. Commemorated at Contay British
Cemetery, Contay VII. E. 18. George had been promoted to Sergeant on
the 20/03/1915 but at his own request reverted back to a Private in
1917. He suffered a wound to his head on the 21st April 1917.
Prior to the war George had worked as a clerk and lived with his
wife Gertrude (nee Mayerscough) at 165 Regent Road, Salford. They
had a daughter, Joan, in 1916. After Georges death Gertrude moved
from Salford to live at Brook Lea, Mellor, Derbyshire.
Walter Everall Ennion - Sergeant
- M2/048566 Army
Service Corps 780th Mechanical Transport Coy. Died 27/05/1917 aged 27.
Commemorated at Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria. Son of Thomas
Frederick and Clara Ennion, Regent Hotel, Regent Road, Salford.
Walter worked as a lorry driver before he enlisted 08/02/1915 aged 24.
He lived with his sister Gertrude Richardson at 32 Vere St, Salford.
Walter had four brothers Tom, Fred, Harry and Charles and two sisters
Annie and Gertrude.
Walter was burnt to death when a candle was knocked over in his tent
while he was asleep.
Samuel Evans - Private - 4860 Border Regiment 1st
Battalion. Killed in Action 28/06/1915 aged 29. Commemorated at Twelve Tree Copse
Cemetery VII. D. 5.
Samuel was a reservist and was mobilised with the Border Regiment at
Carlisle on 7th August 1914 and went to France 25/11/1914 where he
was injured and returned to the South of England for treatment. He
quickly recovered and left Shoeburyness on the 26th May 1915 heading
for the Dardanelles and had been in the trenches there for about a
month when he met his death. Samuel had worked as a bricklayers labourer for
Salford Corporation prior to the war and lived at 168 Tatton St,
