T Faraday - Private - 46591 53rd Young Soldiers.
He lived at 19 Rudman St, Salford.

 

Thomas Farrow - Corporal - T4/245944 Army Service Corps, East Lancs Division.
Prior to the war he worked as a warehouseman and lived at 40 Rudman St, Salford. Thomas enlisted when he was 20 years old on the 31/8/1914.

William Farrow - Sergeant - 2188 Lancashire Fusiliers and later with the Labour Corps 548462. He lived at 40 Rudman St, Salford.

George Ferns - Private - 266311 South Lancashire Regiment 13th Battalion.
George attested 22/05/1916 aged 18 years and 11 months and demobilised 18/02/1919 He lived at 17 Huddart St, Salford.

Robert Finnimore - Private - 10281 Lancashire Fusiliers, 15th Battalion.
Robert achieved the rank of Sergeant before leaving the Army.

William A Garner - Sergeant - 105 Lancashire Fusiliers 7h Battalion. William was sent to the Balkans 05/05/1915 and served until 28/04/1916 when he was discharged due to being "No longer physically fit for service".
He lived at 19 Oxford Street, Salford.

Albert Gerrard - Private - 26993 Royal Dublin Fusiliers 10th Battalion. 
He lived at 45 King Edward St, Salford with his father Thomas.
Prior to the war Albert had worked as a moulder. He attested 08/12/1915 aged 19 and embarked for France 18/08/1916. In February 1917 Albert was taken to Bath War Hospital suffering with Trench Feet a condition which kept him in hospital for 74 days and in June 1918 he spent 124 days at Tipperary Hospital after being gassed. He was demobilised 27/09/1919

Sidney Alfred Gill - Private - 58495 Cheshire Regiment 12th Battalion. He lived at 34 Regent Square, Salford.

 

Thomas Gill - Lance Corporal - 19920 Royal Defence Corps 321 Protection Coy.
Thomas first served with the Manchester Regiment (20999)Supply Coy. He lived with his wife Ada at 34 Regent Square, Salford. Thomas never served abroad so no medals were issued.

Richard Gill - Private - 2126 Lancashire Fusiliers 7th Battalion and had previously served with the Royal Canadian Regiment.
He lived at 76 Coronation St. Son of Joseph and Catherine Gill, brother of George (see below) Joseph and Lillian.
Prior to the war Richard was an electric minder for P & R Jacksons Rolling Mills . He attested on the 06/08/1914. Richard was severely wounded in the foot while serving in the Dardanelles on the 13th August 1915, he was shipped to St David's Hospital, Malta and then to Southern General Hospital, Bristol. He received a gratuity of £50 and was discharged on the 20/2/1917.

 

George Gill - Private - 6798 Queen's Mary's Own Hussars (18th Hussars).
He lived at 76 Coronation St. Son of Joseph and Catherine Gill, brother of Richard (see above) Joseph and Lillian.

 

Arthur Glover - Private - 4/12355 City of London Cyclist Corps.
He lived at 13 Regent Square, Salford.

 

William Goodall - Sergeant - 28746 Royal Welsh Fusiliers 9th Battalion.
He lived at 43 Regent Square, Salford.

 

James Graham - Private - 212224 1st Labour Battalion (Liverpool Regiment) and later with the Royal Army Medical Corps (139311) posted to Hamel Hampstead Military Hospital.
Prior to the war he was a labourer and lived at 35 Huddart St, Salford with his wife Sarah Jane (nee Hammons). He enlisted on the 19/5/1917 aged 28. James didn't receive any medals since he never served abroad.

Robert Graham - Private - 362873 Labour Corps 296th.
Robert had originally joined the Lancashire Fusiliers but due to ill health he was transferred to the Labour Corps. He lived at 26 Coronation St, Salford.

He lived at 36 Rudman St, Salford with his wife Maud and children Harold and Irene.

Frank Hamer - Sergeant - 27316 Lancashire Fusiliers 4th Battalion. He lived at 104 Tatton St, Salford.

He lived at 35 Huddart St, Salford.

James Harford - Private - 3645 Lancashire Fusiliers and later with the Labour Corps (359191).
He Lived at 37 Rudman St, Salford. Uncle of John.

John Harford - Private - 32770 Lancashire Fusiliers and later 32050 8th Gloucester Regiment.
John attested 29/03/1916 aged 18 and embarked for France 22/12/1916. He was wounded 7/08/1917 and more seriously wounded (g.s.w. left thigh and face) 30/05/1918. Due to these wounds John was discharged 26/02/1920 "No longer physically fit for war service". Prior to the war John had worked as a soap stamper and lived at 37 Rudman St, Salford with his parents John (died 29/01/1918 aged 46) and Edith. Nephew of James.

James Albert Helsby - Gunner - 115161 Royal Garrison Artillery, 268th Siege Battery.
James lived at 88 Tatton St, Salford. Son of Henry and Eliza Elsby. James was mentioned in dispatches, the London Gazette entry dated 07/07/1919 can be seen here.

 

Walter Helsby - Private - 12323, 4th City Manchester Regiment.
He attested 8th Sept 1914 aged 20 years, 5 ft 9" tall, brown eyes and dark hair. Walter lived at 88 Tatton St, Salford. The son of Henry and Eliza Elsby.
The 4th City Battalion was completed by the 16th Sept 1914 but due to reports of overcrowding at regimental depots the men of the 4th City were billeted at home and underwent training at City Exhibition Hall and Hulme Cavalry barracks, later at Belle Vue Gardens. When room became available they were billeted at Heaton Park then to Belton Park, Grantham and to Larkhill in Sept 1915. Left Larkhill 7th Nov and took train from Amesbury to Southampton. They crossed the channel aboard the SS Queen Alexandra with transport units on the SS Archimedes.
They reached Le Harve at midnight on the 8th Nov and took a train to Pont Remy. They were then marched to Beaumetz where they stayed till 17th Nov, then into training at Coisy until 28th Nov. Then moved to Canaples till 8th Dec. Then on to Beres-au-bois where they received trench instructions from the 6th Leicester's before moving on to Bray on the 6th Jan.
8th Jan - Took over B3 sector trenches at Carnoy.
12th Jan - Relieved by the Liverpool Regiment and marched to Bray.
16th Jan - Back in trenches relieved by the Liverpool Regiment on the 20th and rested under canvas in woods a mile behind the firing line.
24th Jan - Back in trenches, the Germans sent over a great bombardment on the 28th and a gas warning was sounded twice.
29th Jan - Great attack along the line, captured a few Germans and their officers, relieved by the Liverpool Regiment.
Walter was badly wounded on the 10th Feb 1916 (GSW right hip). The 19th Battalions war diary has the following entry for that day;

"Fatigues etc - Enemy put about 100 shells into billets wounding 7 men, one of whom has since died."

Walter was passed through the field hospital and sent back to the Uk where he sent 456 days in the Welsh War Hospital, Whitchurch. On the 16th May 1917 Walter was given £1.00 and a plain suit and was discharged from further war service being no longer physically fit for duty.

 

Ernest Helsby - Private - 21894 Reserve Regiment of Calvery.
He enlisted 12/12/1915.
Ernest lived at 123 Granville St, Salford with his wife Jane (nee Beckett) and their two children Vera and Ernest. Son of Henry and Eliza Elsby. Due to an existing problem with his inner ear Ernest never served abroad. After numerous operations he was discharged 27/02/1917 being no loner physically fit for duty.

 

Sydney Helsby - Private- 202338 Manchester Regiment and later 31507 with the Border Regiment.
Sydney lived at 88 Tatton St, Salford. Son of Henry and Eliza Elsby.

 

James Frederick Hertzog - Sapper - 58432 Royal Engineers and later as a corporal with the Labour Corp (597838).
He lived at 50 Rudman St, Salford.

Frank Hodgson - Private - 280856 Lancashire Fusiliers 7th Battalion. He lived at 21 Huddart St, Salford.

 

Harry Holman - Rifleman - 371780 8th City of London Regiment (Post Office Rifles).
Harry was a postman on the 1901 census. He lived at 23 Regent Square, Salford with his sons William and Henry (see under).

 

Henry Holman - Private - 280254 Lancashire Fusiliers, 1/7th Battalion (East Lancashire Division).
Henry lived at 23 Regent Square, Salford with his father Harry and brother William.

 

William Holman - Private - 64307 Welsh Regiment 9th Battalion. William lived at 23 Regent Square, Salford with his father Harry and brother Henry.

Albert Howard - Private - 37136 Hampshire Regiment and then to the Labour Corps (108219).
He lived at 25 Rudman St, Salford.

 

John Howard - Private - 14541 East Lancashire Regiment 9th Battalion.
He lived at 25 Rudman St, Salford.

 

S Hughes

 

Arthur Ingham - Driver - 313002 Army Service Corps 551st Company.
Prior to the war Arthur had been employed as a rubber worker and had lived at 54 Rudman St, Salford with his sister Sarah Ellen Baugh. He attested 17/11/1925 aged 31.
